What You Are Missing By Not Having a Website for Your Business

I finally decided to put up a website for my copywriting business. Actually, I decided that months ago. I just didn’t get around to doing it. But I’m currently working on that and I’m hoping it will be up soon.

You know, we are all in business. And business is good. But this digital age, man. It’s just moving a bit too fast. What was considered an “extra step” a decade ago (thank God I was too young to care a decade ago) is now a must-have tool for business. For instance, social media, websites, mobile, online presence and all that.

It turns out a website is a pretty important tool in business nowadays. I don’t know about you but I didn’t know what to make of it a year ago. But after some research (and a million newsletters), I think there is a lot at stake.

You’d expect that almost everyone in business has a website – except you.
Not quite the case.

In fact, less than 50% of small businesses have websites. Highlights a survey by Redshift Research which reports that almost 60% of small businesses lack websites. About 48% of these businesses don’t even have a Facebook page. So it’s possible that your lunch place does not have a Facebook page. Just the owner’s account where she regularly posts pictures of menu items.
Given the importance of a website (more to that in a while), not having one for your business is a huge risk and you have a lot to lose. You don’t have to expose yourself to such risk.

Benefits of Having a Website:

The day you create your business a website is always “first thing tomorrow.” Or next week. Or next year “when you are ready.” It’s never today. But every time you push that date you are missing on a customer or two. You are missing a chance to sell to their sister or cousin, friend, neighbor, look-alike, etc.
Below are benefits you look to enjoy by building a website for your business:

You Are Already Behind Time

Okay, I’m sorry for putting it like that. But your competition has a website already. And don’t count on uniqueness of your product to guarantee your lifetime success. There is always a substitute. There is always a customer who does not know about your product. And there is always a researcher, developer and innovator somewhere working all night.
The benefit you get by starting today is that you eliminate the chance to lose on another sale. The bonus is you get more creative as you go.

It Serves as an Online Portfolio

A website is a medium of communication. It is a glass window your prospective customer can look through as they window-shop.
A website gives you a chance to show your prospects what you have done. This way you assure them that you can provide what they are looking for. Because you have provided it to someone else who was in your position some time.

It Enhances Accessibility of Your Business

Your business website will never go to bed when you and your employees do. It will stay up all night. It will be active by the day and when you go to lunch your website will be working. And the fact that the internet is global makes it even better. Anyone can access your website at any time.
You will agree that if you could you would remain Open all the time. Because you don’t want to miss on that passer-by or that customer calling to confirm something. A website will give you that chance and more.

It Helps Improve Customer Service

As said, a website does not go to sleep. This makes sure that your customers can contact you any time. Which customer wants to be restricted on what they want?
And it’s not just about ordering and buying. With a website, your customers also get a chance to address any issues they might have concerning your products.
Your response time also reduces. You can attend to customers’ needs as fast as they want you to. Think about the hassle of having to someone’s premises to confirm something, get clarification or complain about something that a simple email could handle. That’s your customer right there. She is mad and asking so many WHYs.

It Helps Build Customer Loyalty – and Later, Advocacy

The first step to building a loyal customer base is ensuring the customer experience is at the top. A website will help you improve customer experience by improving customer service and accessibility.
Soon you will have as many repeat customers as all your customers. With time, you have customers who are not only willing to buy from but also vouch for you. Wouldn’t you like that? Turning a prospect into a customer; then a loyal customer; and then an advocate?

It Exposes You to a Wider Market

As said, websites are global. This means that your business is out there getting discovered by people from everywhere in the world. This grows your prospective customer base and your chances of making more profits than someone without a website.

You Get a Chance to Have Clearer Understanding of Your Target Market

The different reviews by customers give you the insight you need to run a successful business that is reliable to provide true value to your customers.
The important thing here is to keep your senses active. Listen to your customers. Go online and read different reviews about your products (or similar products). Know what your ideal customer wants and incorporate that in your products. Go to your website and let them know that you have what they are looking for. How strategic – I know.

You Save on Resources: Time and Money/strong

Someone calls your office seeking to know all the commodities you offer. You are almost too certain that this person will not order for “everything” when she decides to buy but you have to pull out your catalogue and read them out for that prospect. This is tiring for both of you, right?
Take the same situation but assuming you have a website where you have posted an updated list of your commodities so all this customer has to do is just go to your website at her own time and look at the products then decide what they want. It makes everything much easier, faster and more detailed.

So why the Excuses?

Despite all the benefits (which I might not have exhausted btw), many business owners are still giving excuses why they don’t have websites yet. Some of the most common are:
# “I don’t have the time.” To do what? To build a website or to copy-paste your company information on the site? C’mon.
# “I don’t really use the internet that much.” It’s not about you. It’s about the customer and guess what? The customer uses the internet that much. Oh, she loves the internet.
# “My product can’t be sold online.” But it can sure be promoted and ordered online. As it can be ordered through a phone call so can it be ordered on your website.
# “I don’t think my business will benefit.” Why? Because you think your product can’t be sold online, right? Oh, I see.
# “A website costs too much.” No it doesn’t. Look around, you will find a company offering website creation and hosting at lunch-money price. And it’s all quality stuff.
# “A website could bring in too many orders.” Like, “no universe, I didn’t ask for all these customers and returns”? C’mon.
Whatever your excuse is, look into it and you will see that it’s not a valid enough reason to not have a website (or Facebook Page for heaven’s sake). Mine was, “I have a lot going on at the same time. So I have to figure some stuff out. It’s so important to my business that I can’t afford to mess it up by rushing.” Over 25 words above yours but was still not valid enough.

Your Website Needs to Look Good (Read: Be Professional) Though

The only worse thing than not having a website is having a poorly-organized website. I’m talking about the layout – design. The contents too. What information have you provided? How have you provided that information? Does it sound like a turn-off to your potential customer?
It helps to create a professional website and updating it regularly. Don’t provide wrong information on the website. Take care of words on the site because words do have effect.
Because as fast as a website can build your brand so can it ruin it – only faster.
So… What next?

Will you do it?
